Photo by @ljohnphoto for @rippleeffectimages. The women of TIST hold tiny seedlings, not quite ready for planting, as if moving toward a shrine, offering in hand. Over the months and years they have tended these seeds, placed in a membrane of plastic and a fistful of dirt. In coming together through TIST (The International Small Group & Tree Planting Program), they are in many ways helping each other grow, expand and become more powerful. Their nurseries mature into groves of cypress, gravellia and banana bringing health to the air, land and perhaps most importantly, their self-worth.
From their labors spring healthier families, children in school, better nutrition, less domestic and sexual violence. And for the environment, these groves lessen soil erosion, create better crop yields, pump more oxygen into the air, and do their tiny part in reducing humanities carbon footprint. It’s a lot to ask of a seedling and handful of women but they are up to the task.

#PhotographyForGood, @RippleEffectImages is proud to say that after we covered their program in #Kenya, TIST told us that our film helped them expand to two additional countries. According to the latest count, over 10 million trees are alive today because of their work.
