A Yellow-faced Bumblebee dips its tongue into a Showy Aster flower. Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – Bumblebees are in a hurry: summer is waning and the flowering plants these bees depend on for nectar and pollen are quickly fading and going to seed. Soon the entire colony will die, leaving only a single queen who will hibernate over the winter, only to begin a new colony next spring. Photographed in the wild on Whidbey island, Washington in support of the Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas project,an effort to better understand, and protect, these crucial pollinators. #bumblebeewatch #pollinators #bumblebees
