Then and now – two photos with Mr Eddie Teo, Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC), taken 10 years apart. The top photo was in 2008, when Eddie was appointed PSC Chairman; the bottom photo was today at lunch, two weeks before he retires at the end of July. The biggest difference is probably the amount of white hair between the two of us. :) Eddie himself was a President’s Scholar. He joined the Public Service in 1970 and has held many key appointments in a long and distinguished career, including Director, Security and Intelligence Division; Director, Internal Security Department; Permanent Secretary in MINDEF; Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office; and High Commissioner in Canberra, Australia. Eddie has made considerable contributions in his decade as PSC chairman. A firm believer in diversity, he sought and inducted commission members from different backgrounds and professions ranging from businesses, academia to social work. His belief in diversity extended to scholarships. Polytechnic students were awarded scholarships for the first time. Eddie also encouraged students to venture out of their comfort zones to pursue studies in countries such as Egypt, Spain and Thailand. For his sterling contributions to the Public Service, Eddie was awarded The Order of Nila Utama First Class last year. I would like to thank him for 48 years of service to the nation, and also for many years as a friend and colleague. Wishing you a happy and fulfilling retirement! – LHL (Top photo courtesy of Eddie Teo)
