One district in Mosul, Iraq, is now marked by a sign that says in Arabic: “Here is the graveyard of ISIS.” They city has struggled to keep pace with the return of residents after the expulsion of the Islamic State nearly a year ago. It’s also struggling to clean up. Mosul doesn’t have the personnel to focus on clearing bodies and unexploded ordnance. So now, garbage men are helping with these grim tasks. On a recent visit to #Mosul, the photographer @ivorprickett approached the city’s main dump. “It brought me back to a year earlier when I had accompanied Iraqi special forces entering the city under siege,” he writes. Here, he photographed Mohammed Tahar Ibrahim and his relatives beginning the arduous task of trying to rebuild their flattened home. Swipe left to see 2 more scenes from Mosul: people in front of some of the few reopened shops in the Old City; and a group of young scavengers, who approach every new load of trash with a mixture of excitement and desperation.
