Of the estimated 2.1 million Americans currently in the grip of #opioid addiction, many are women of childbearing age. Experts estimate that a baby with an opioid-withdrawal condition called neonatal abstinence syndrome is born in the U.S. every 15 minutes. Some of those babies are born to mothers who go into treatment when they’re pregnant. The standard of care for a pregnant women addicted to opioids is treatment with the opioid-replacement drug methadone, or a newer drug called buprenorphine. But a fetus adapted to them is still at risk for withdrawal after birth. While on assignment for @nytmag, @littlebrownmushroom took this photo of Elizabeth, 26, and her daughter. Elizabeth had been energized and secretive in the early years of her addiction. She was addicted to Percocet and ultimately began injecting heroin. She attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, but she relapsed on heroin 3 times. When she became pregnant, she was taking Percocet. She wanted to taper off the pills. But she couldn’t do it without going into withdrawal, so in her 7th month of pregnancy, she returned to #methadone. When the baby arrived in June, she began showing signs of withdrawal. “We started bawling our eyes out,” Elizabeth told @nytmag. What kind of life does she want for her daughter? “The opposite of mine.” Visit the link in our profile to read more.
