@mitch_epstein photographed a lone telephone booth on an empty road near Carsaig Bay, on the Isle of Mull in #Scotland. This week, @tmagazine explores the outermost outposts of the British Isles. The focus: St. Kilda, a @unesco #WorldHeritage site owned by the @nationaltrustforscotland. The archipelago is made up of 4 islands: Hirta, Soay, Dun and Boreray. Beyond it to the west lies the North Atlantic in an unbroken stretch until Newfoundland. Some numbers might assist in imagining the place: Hirta is about 2.5 square miles, but it has the highest sea cliffs in the U.K. It’s easy to see what attracted Michael Powell, the British director, to St. Kilda, which inspired his first major film, in 1937: “The Edge of the World.” The film tells of the desertion of the archipelago. Almost 10 years later, Michael ventured to the Isle of Mull, a more tractable place in the Inner #Hebrides, to film “I Know Where I’m Going!” Visit the link in our profile to see @tmagazine’s tour of no man’s land, off the coast of Scotland.
