Meet @brassburlesque: a New York City troupe that is reclaiming a scene that they say has often left out women of color, queer and transgender performers. When our visual reporter @mychivas caught up with brASS (BrASS: Brown RadicalAss Burlesque) recently, there was an assortment of performers whose individual acts included a combination of dazzling burlesque sequences, like @munroelilly’s performance — seen here — in which gravity-defying body contortions heightened the suspense of the evening. The group’s founders, who grew up in and around NYC, were frustrated by a #burlesque dancing community that, they say, is still predominantly white, cisgender and thin. Watch #InstagramStories here and on @nytgender to hear from the performers reclaiming a scene that they say has often left out women of color, queer, and transgender performers.
