Last year, ISIS loyalists seized Marawi, a predominantly Muslim city of more than 200,000 people on the Philippine island of Mindanao. Since then, #Marawi has seen months of military siege and devastating American-assisted airstrikes. In April, the residents were finally being allowed to return — but only for a day or 2 per family, to salvage what they could. As the visits began, 3 @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists were given exclusive access both to their neighborhoods and to some parts of the city that were still cut off to civilians and littered with ordnance and rubble: skeletal remains, bomb remnants, an empty vault that used to hold money. Across the city, the residents tried to gather up whatever belongings they could, from scrap metal to sell in the market to half-burned high school diplomas. @jeszmann took this photo of residents. Watch our #InstagramStory to see a few of the scenes our Southeast Asia correspondent and video journalist @bcsolomon witnessed. (You can swipe up on the story to watch the full dispatch.)
