Yesterday marked the start of the @commonwealth2018 (CHOGM) meetings. In my interventions, I spoke on Singapore’s sustainability commitment as well as promoting free trade and investments among Commonwealth countries.
Singapore is serious about climate change, as it has a tremendous impact on sustainable development. We will work with other countries – the Singapore Cooperation Programme has trained more than 12,000 officials from developing countries in climate change programmes.

On trade, as I explained in my Washington Post op-ed (https://wapo.st/2JYDBPV), countries have benefited from the multilateral approach which sets uniform, universal rules of trade. In addition, many Commonwealth countries participate in regional agreements, like the recently concluded Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Of the CPTPP’s 11 members, 6 are Commonwealth countries: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore.
I also suggested Commonwealth countries should utilise the “Commonwealth Advantage” of similar regulatory systems, operating languages, business environments and economic outlooks, to trade more with one another. We must work with one another, to prosper and live in peace together. – LHL
