Shanghai certainly lives up to its title of China’s fastest-growing city. I was last here in 2010 for the Shanghai World Expo, and the city has changed dramatically since then.

Received a warm welcome by Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang, and we had a good discussion on strengthening the cooperation between Singapore and Shanghai, given our similar economic outlooks and openness.

Also met a group of Singaporean businessmen based around the vibrant Yangtze River delta. We had a good chat over lunch on the rapid developments in China and how businesses have to constantly keep up with times.

After lunch, I visited Envision, a smart energy solution provider. China is the world’s largest electricity consumer, which makes energy efficiency a key priority. Artificial intelligence, the internet-of-things, and big data are significant pieces contributing to the smarter use of energy. In the same spirit as our #SmartNation initiatives, we can learn from China in using smart solutions to improve energy efficiency for a more sustainable future.
