garden gold - otherwise know as spring sown carrots I wait all season for

On this dappled autumn afternoon - a multitude of golden red and green tones tinge the leaves -I've been digging in the garden looking for all those carrots I know are just below the dark rich surface .
.
edible entirely - from root to frond tip - they are one of the things I look forward to in the later season. Just next to them are the parsnips - still tiny and not quite sweet they will overwinter in the ground - covered with a layer of hay to keep the frost from them - a treat for spring .
.
but now I'm enjoying these orange and ruby beauties- and thinking carrot soup with black eyed peas for tomorrow's lunch
