In the Netherlands, #climatechange isn’t seen as a hypothetical or a drag on the economy. It’s an opportunity. While the Trump administration reneges on the Paris accord, delegations from around the world travel to #Rotterdam to learn how to deal with climate threats. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @michael_kimmelman visited, too. He found a sinking city that has become a model for the challenges facing cities all over the world. From the moment settlers first started pumping water to clear land for houses and farms, water has been the central, existential fact of life in the Netherlands — a daily matter of survival and national identity. The Dutch approach is, in part, to let the water in. “We have no choice,” said Rotterdam's mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb. “We must learn to live with water.” That means the construction of facilities like parking garages that become emergency reservoirs.
