It’s time to wave the #StarsandStripes: Today is Flag Day, an annual event first declared by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 to celebrate the American flag. This year, Americans are marking 240 years since Old Glory was adopted by the Continental Congress. @justin.gilliland, a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ summer photo intern, took a trip to Hoboken, New Jersey, to capture the raising of one very large flag: a 530-pound hot-air balloon adorned with Stars and Stripes. (Can a balloon be a flag? We’ll leave it up to you. Either way, it’s probably more appropriate to say that the balloon-flag was inflated, not raised.) Barry DiLibero, a pilot from Chester Spring, Pennsylvania, created the balloon after 9/11. It has flown in the NYC area annually since then; this morning, it was preparing for the @quickchek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, which takes place in late July. Festival organizers call the balloon, which is 5 stories tall, the “world’s largest free-flying American flag.” Follow @nytarchives to read a bit more about #FlagDay. #??
