A celebration of Singapore Chinese culture would be incomplete without xinyao. We were treated to three xinyao songs –《细水长流》,《麻雀衔竹枝》and《新加坡派》– by Dr Liang Wern Fook at the official opening of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) yesterday.
The ZingO Drum Group also put up an energetic and lively performance [Photo 2]. The SCCC will provide spaces and facilities for the community to display Chinese arts and culture. I got a preview of an exhibition on the Singapore Chinese identity. Zulkifle Mahmod is a sound-media artist who represented Singapore at the Venice Biennale in 2007. His exhibit ‘In Between’ features percussion rhythms of popular Chinese tunes being played on a system of copper pipes [Photo 3]. Hope the SCCC will strengthen Singapore Chinese arts and culture, and make them accessible and appealing to all races and ages. – LHL (MCI Photos by Chwee)
