After years of uncharacteristic silence, @damienhirst — an artist known for his love-it-or-hate-it artworks — is orchestrating his own comeback. His first major show of new work in 10 years opens to the public this Sunday. Called “Treasures From the Wreck of the Unbelievable,” it’s an underwater fantasy. The works — hundreds of objects fashioned to look as though they were antiquities dredged up from the bottom of the sea — will fill the @palazzo_grassi and the Punta della Dogana museums in Venice. The show is widely seen as an attempt to kick-start the 51-year-old artist’s career, which has suffered since 2008, when the financial and art markets crashed. But it’s a giant artistic and financial gamble. “Treasures” cost @damienhirst millions of dollars to produce, and collectors say prices for the works start around $500,000 apiece rising to upward of $5 million. But with @damienhirst’s market untested on such a grand scale, the art world wonders: Will he sink or swim? @anarcofilo took this portrait of #Damien Hirst at the @palazzo_grassi in Venice.
