The battle for #SteauaBucharest is a complex tale of greed, money and, quite possibly, revenge. Romania’s most popular #soccer team was formed in 1947. Like many teams in Eastern Europe under communism, it was owned and run by the government. But after the fall of communism, state ownership became unfashionable. In 1998, Gigi Becali, a former shepherd who made a fortune in real estate, gradually increased his influence. A few years later, he seized control of the team. “When a man becomes rich he wants to become famous,” he told @nytimessports. But since 2011, Gigi has been in a legal battle for control of the team with a formidable adversary: the Ministry of Defense. The dispute could destroy one of Europe’s best-known teams. It has divided fans, with the majority boycotting. It has seen Gigi lose the rights to the club’s badge and even its name. It has also led to the creation of a new army team, CSA Steaua Bucharest, which is likely to begin play next season. @pungovschi photographed Steaua Bucharest players during an outdoor workout.
