This teenage boy has seen things no child should ever witness. Recently, he saw his mother for the first time in 6 years. Duop, who’s about 16, was a #childsoldier in South Sudan. Family members say he quit school around the age of 9, left home, joined a rebel militia, then joined the government army, defected, became a rebel again, was captured, beaten and tortured by government soldiers and then discarded. The full extent of what he experienced — and suffered — is a bit of a mystery. Sometimes, when he’s sitting alone, Duop suddenly laughs. Or scowls. When he walked off a plane recently, he had 2 rocks jammed into his ears. His head still hurt from the beatings, and loud noises bothered him, but he didn’t want any earplugs. Just those 2 little rocks. @unicef had tracked his mother down and brought her to a displaced persons camp, the only safe place for them to reunite. That day, his relatives tried to seem joyous. In a way, they said, it was as if he’d come back from the dead. “But he’s not the same,” his aunt said. “He’s deformed.” Our staff photographer Tyler Hicks photographed Duop reuniting with family and neighbors.
