When Amanda Peet was 26, she made the mistake of reading a review of her work in the play “Whale Music.” “Everyone got a nice review in The New York Times, except me,” Amanda writes this week in @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, of all places. Our critic wrote that she was “trying” to play her character “as a sort of British lower-class Joan Rivers.” “I love Joan Rivers,” Amanda writes, “but this was an intimate English drama about 20-year-olds on the Isle of Wight. And what exactly did she mean that I was ‘trying’ to be like Rivers?” So, over the next 3 weeks, Amanda tried to prove our critic wrong instead of doing her job. After that experience, she vowed never again to read another review. That meant that when, in 2006, another @ニューヨーク・タイムズ critic wrote a not-glowing review of her work in “Barefoot in the Park,” she didn’t read it. “In case you’re curious, The Times kindly archives the review online forever and ever,” Amanda adds. “Please don’t tell me what it says.” Visit the link in our profile to read more, and to see more portraits of #AmandaPeet by @elizabethrweinberg.
