@cliff_kapono is no stranger to the hunt for the perfect wave. But these days, he’s often chasing something even more unusual: microbial swabs from fellow #surfers. The 29-year-old biochemist has collected more than 500 samples by rubbing cotton-tipped swabs over the heads, mouths, navels and other parts of surfers’ bodies, as well as their boards. Why? He and his colleagues at the #SurferBiome Project are looking for signs of antibiotic-resistant organisms. The ocean, home to an incredible diversity of dissolved chemistry, acts as a reservoir for resistance genes, and researchers like @cliff_kapono are trying to determine whether, and to what extent, they move from the seas into the human population. The big question: Do seas make us sick? Surfers may have the answer. @arianadrehsler photographed @cliff_kapono at Black’s Beach, a popular surf spot in La Jolla, California.
