Nothing symbolizes the wrack and ruin of #Afghanistan and its 4 decades of war better than Darulaman Palace. The palace is a lot more than an unpretty face: It encompasses the sweep of almost 9 decades of Afghan history. Over the years, it has served as a medical school, a warehouse for raisins (a lot of raisins) and the seat of various ministries. It burned down and was rebuilt in the 1960s, and it was pummeled and pockmarked by every conceivable caliber of weapon fired by nearly every faction in the country’s recent wars. While on #nytassignment, the photographer @jimhuylebroek took a look inside. In just one typical square yard of wall on the northeast tower, it’s possible to count 105 bullet, shrapnel and artillery holes. Yet like Afghanistan itself, the palace never quite totally collapsed. Now, the country’s leaders hope to get it ready for the centenary of Afghanistan’s independence from Britain in 1919. And not only is the country restoring its most emblematic building, it’s doing so entirely by itself. Funding is Afghan; so are the architects, engineers and workers. The price tag, too, is Afghan: $20 million — roughly 1.3 billion Afghanis — for the 4-year project to rebuild the 3-story palace. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
