#SpeakingInDance | “We don’t say step dancer,” said C. Brian Williams, the founder of @stepafrika. “We just say stepper.” The rapid-fire percussive spectacle of #stepping — a form of dance that uses the entire body as an instrument — is a thrilling sight. But for Brian, “the rhythm comes first.” Feet may pound the floor, but in stepping, which has roots in the fraternities and sororities of historically black colleges and universities, the angles of the arms and the precision of the group are just as crucial. #StepAfrika holds annual auditions in its hometown, Washington, D.C., on May 20. What is Brian looking for? “An excellent sense of rhythm,” he told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “Precision. And, of course, tremendous enthusiasm and energy. I like to call some of the artists ‘dancer-musicians.’ When I’m watching a show, I’m listening to it and I’m watching it — that’s the challenge of the art.” @jaibirdn made this video for our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
