Sheep at dusk near the Hassan Sham refugee camp east of Mosul. Every day, dozens of Iraqi families flee Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city. The military campaign to retake it has entered its 6th week and is currently bogged down in a grueling fight. When the offensive started, Iraqi officers worried ISIS would destroy the bridges over the Tigris River that connect east and west Mosul, cutting off trapped civilians. Now coalition warplanes are knocking the bridges out themselves to prevent ISIS from bringing supplies and car bombs into the battle-scarred east. And there is already talk of an Aleppo-style siege of the city center. So the @unitednations is busily expanding and building more camps to accommodate perhaps hundreds of thousands more displaced civilians. @sergeyponomarev is on the ground in Iraq with the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Baghdad bureau chief Tim Arango.
