Bairavasana, named after Bairava, a fierce representation of Shiva as the Frightful & Terrible. The first time I tried this pose I felt terrified and destroyed so the name is fitting. But Bairava is also called the protector, as he guards the eight directions of the universe, sacred temples and is the protector of women and the timid. So too does the practice reach in and transform your world. Sooner or later the difficult asanas become easy or at least easier, and then what at first may appear frightening eventually morphs into something for the good of all. And at that moment you keep your peaceful center even as you practice the most difficult poses.
