Photograph by Rémi Bénali @remibenali. Arles, France. This statue is not part of the Roman boat discovery storytelling now on my account but interesting somehow as it is related to the Antiquity beliefs. Neptune was the God of rivers and the sea (Poseidon for the Greeks). I photographed this figurehead for the Museon Arlaten, the ethnographic museum of the Provencal culture (South of France) located in Arles. This museum will start soon a huge mutation (21 millions euros invested) and I have been contracted to photograph its renewal. This 2 meters high carved wooden decoration was found in a garden of our city and in pretty bad shape. The Museon was able to restaurate it thanks to the support of the Fondation Total du Patrimoine. Neptune looks powerful and stunning now. It was supposed to be the figurehead at the prow of a ship made between the 18th and 19th century, but no ones knows for sure and further investigations are on theit way. The Egyptians placed figures of holy birds on the prow while the Phoenicians (ancient Libanon) used horses representing speed. The Ancient Greeks used boars heads to symbolise acute vision and ferocity while the Roman boats often mounted a carving of a centurion representing valour in battle. In Northern Europe, serpents, bulls, dolphins or dragons were customary and by the 13th Century, the swan was used representing grace and mobility. Neptune was also workship by the Roman as the God of Horses. I am posting time to time on my feed a few images of our white horses of Camargue, don't they have the magic of the unicorns? ;) #france #arles #museonarlaten #neptune #poseidon #antiquity #ancientgods #history #rome #greece #figuerhead #boat #ship #figuredeproue #archaeology #archeologie #histoire #ancientworlds
