Photo by @DavidDoubilet Sunlight, Sea and Sharks. A gray reef shark glides beneath the surface of a calm sea in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea. We were surprised and pleased to see healthy populations of sharks in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea. We encountered curious, non-threatening sharks on many
dives. The presence of these apex predators were a signal of an intact coral reef ecosystem. Although humans fear sharks, they should have much more fear of us. 75+ million sharks a year are harvested just for their fins to make a bland tasteless soup that signifies wealth and status. Some species of sharks have declined 90%. It used to be commonplace to see sharks like this gray reef but now it is rare. Sharks have become ghosts in the sea. #LONETREE COLORADO APRIL 8 Join us for NG LIVE Coral Kingdoms and Empires of Ice, the story behind the @ナショナルジオグラフィック story. with @natgeocreative. @Seacam #Ocean Shark #KimbeBay #PapuaNewGuinea #CoralTriangle #Adventure #Life for #moreocean #followme @jenniferhayesig and @daviddoubilet
