Photo: @bethjwald/@thephotosociety A year ago today, I was in between assignments in southern #Chile and managed to re-connect with a #gaucho friend who I had met over ten years ago while working on a project documenting life of gauchos (known as “Huasos” in parts of Chile) on Patagonia sheep ranches - at the time, Yael “Pollo” Velasquez was working on large #sheep #ranch or #estancia in Santa Cruz province, Argentina, and he generously loaned me one of his horses and let me follow him and his compañeros in their daily life - I called him Super Gaucho because of his skill and his enthusiasm for the work, the culture, the land. Years later, Pollo turned up in Colorado, working first as a guest-worker on a cattle ranch, a gig which ended badly- he moved on to other jobs and we eventually lost touch. On a hunch last February, I stopped through his home town of Bahia #Murta, on Lago General Carrera.
