Once numbering in the tens of thousands, these birds, found only in Hawai’i, had dwindled to as few as 30 as recently as 1952 due to introduced predators and and habitat alteration. Happily, captive breeding and careful re-introductions have brought them back from the brink, and Nenes can be found today in several places on the islands of Kauai and Maui.
