The U.S. led coalition in Afghanistan ended its combat mission Sunday, marking the formal close of the War in Afghanistan. Many Magnum photographers have worked in the region documenting that conflict: @PvanAgtmael, #LarryTowell, #MoisesSaman, #TimHetherington, to name a few. But of course, war has plagued Afghanistan since long before 2001. Magnum photographer #Abbas was on the ground during the Afghan Civil War of the mid 1990s, when urban centers like Kabul, Mazar-e Sharif and Kandahar were major battlegrounds. He made this picture at the start of the conflict, in 1992 -- a Mujahid of the Hezb-e Islami guarding a road leading to the capital.
