Ten years ago... INDONESIA. Banda Aceh (Aceh). 13/01/2005: Tsunami aftermath. Survivors recovering goods from their destroyed house. On Dec. 26th 2004 a magnitude 9 earthquake off the Sumatra coast triggered a tsunami wave which thoroughly destroyed the coastline of many countries bordering the Indian Ocean. Indonesia’s Sumatra, and in particular its politically troubled Aceh province, was hit hardest of all with an estimated 160,000 dead, 1 out of 9 people homeless and a completely disrupted coastline infrastructure. Towns, bridges and roads were totally destroyed, making communication with the victims extremely difficult. A huge relief operation was set up with countless countries and NGOs participating.
