When Magnum was formed in 1947, the founders had ambitions of covering the world. So, they simply divvied up globe like pie: Henri Cartier-Bresson would photograph India and the Far East, David "Chim" Seymour would take Europe, Robert Capa would be roving "at large", and George Rodger's beat would be Africa. After covering the atrocities of WWII for LIFE Magazine, Rodger wanted to leave Europe -- "I had to get away from the dirty of war, from the shouting of the injured and the voice of the dying." And so, from Cape Town to Cairo, he spent years making images like this from 1948 -- a young Basuto boy wrapping a blanket around himself in what is now Lesotho.
