Photo: @joannapinneo The festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain dates back to the Middle Ages and festivities during the week include 25 papier-mâché figures, “Gigantes” or Giants and “Cabezudos”or Bigheads, that parade through the city each day. The first authentic reference to the Gigantes dates from the early 17th century. The Gigantes presently in use are from 1860 and were created by Navarran artist Tadeo Amorena and represent the mythological kings and queens of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. They can reach a height of over 13 feet above the dancer that carries them and can weigh between 130 and 142 pounds. The other figures are somewhat smaller and are referred to as “Cabezudos” or Bigheads. These figures are loved by all the children and the first memory of many locals of Sanfermines is of the #Gigantes. @thephotosociety @joannapinneo @ナショナルジオグラフィック @auphotos #runningofthebulls #Spain #Basque #SanFermin #festival #photography #photojournalism #Pamplona #summer #Europe #latergram
