Sometimes it takes numerous tries, a little luck and attention to unexpected details to get a photo that I have had in mind. I have long loved this particular #BristleconePine in the #WhiteMountains of eastern #California, one of the planet’s oldest living trees, but the light was always boring every time I visited. Then, while shooting a catalog for an outdoor company, I thought again of the site but arrived to sudden overcast and pouring rain from an unexpected thunderstorm. I almost gave up, but then looked west towards the crest of the adjacent Sierra Nevada, where just a sliver of clear sky hovered over the mountains. After waiting out a the downpour, the sun suddenly dropped into that slot and I had three minutes of magic light to get the shot.
I grew up and launched my career in the small town of #Bishop, in the #OwensValley, a vertical mile below, which is one of the nation’s most photogenic places and part of the reason I became a photographer. After a long hiatus in Montana, I am excited to be returning to the area to teach a #photoseminar at the height of fall colors in October.
