Photo: @Robert Clark | This scanning electron micrograph was shot for a story on Biomimetics (the inspiration of nature upon design) in National Geographic Magazine. It’s something you probably use every day. What is it? Head over to @Robert Clark to find out what was imitated and why!

In 1948, George de Mestral was examining burs pulled from his pants and dog’s coat after a hike and found that the bur’s spines were tipped with tiny hooks. This inspired him to create something that has since then been used in ubiquity in the modern age: Velcro!

Check out @ナショナルジオグラフィック to see a close up of modern-day Velcro as seen under a scanning electron microscope. @ナショナルジオグラフィック @thephotosociety @instituteartist
