Who could have imagined that the halls of the Capitol building would be stormed by an angry mob while Congress was about to certify the results of November's Presidential election? As I watched a woman dressed as Lady Liberty in the mob storming the Capitol, I kept thinking, 'It can’t happen here', but it did -- resulting in one of the darkest of days for America. Actually, we should have known this would happen as our current president encouraged it. But freedom and democracy are bigger than any mob. The election was certified at 4 a.m. this morning. The Statue of Liberty, representing Libertas the Roman goddess of freedom, was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States in 1886. Holding a torch above her head with her right hand, in her left, she carries a tablet inscribed July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals, the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A broken shackle and chain lie at her feet, commemorating the national abolition of slavery. Since its dedication, this copper statue, now aged with a green patina, has been an icon of freedom and of the United States and a beacon welcoming immigrants arriving by sea. In 1984, the Statue of Liberty was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The UNESCO "Statement of Significance" describes the statue as a "masterpiece of the human spirit” that "endures as a highly potent symbol of ideals such as liberty, peace, human rights, abolition of slavery, democracy and opportunity.” The full name of the statue is ‘Liberty Enlightening the World’.
