Long and winding road: Mountain passes like these in Kham (eastern Tibet) offer some of the most spectacular vantage points for photography, but sadly, they are disappearing as China burrows under the ranges with tunnels to make way for highways. Though the tunnels decrease travel time and make the far reaches of Tibet more accessible, they now make it harder than ever to reach these passes. In the past, I would look forward to driving over these sometimes treacherous lofty passes by four-wheel drive to take advantage of the panoramic picture possibilities from the top. Now the only way over is by foot, not an easy feat when hiking over mountains at altitudes as high as 15,000 feet.
