A walk in the woods - Yamabushi, Japanese mountain ascetic monks, climb the 2,446-step stone stairway through cedar forests to the summit of Mt. Haguro. They are followers of shugendō, an ancient religion combining aspects of mountain worship, Buddhism, Shintoism and Taoism. Critical to their beliefs is the pursuit of enlightenment through communing with nature over long periods. The religion places a heavy emphasis on asceticism and feats of endurance. White and saffron-robed yamabushi toting horogai conch-shell trumpets are still a common sight near the shugendō holy sites of Dewa Sanzan of which Mt. Haguro is the most famous. Dewa Sanzan is a popular pilgrimage site visited by many, including famed haiku poet Matsuo Bashō, who walked these same steps alongside yamabushi in the 17th century.
