Tulou, Fujian, China: From its opening scenes with a spirited young girl chasing a chicken over roof tops of an oddly shaped building, it’s clear that Disney opted for maximum visual impact over historical accuracy for its 2020 remake of the studio’s 1998 animated feature Mulan as a live-action film starring Chinese actors. It was widely anticipated, especially in China, but after its theatrical release there audiences had a list of objections. Primary among them was the fact that the legendary woman warrior Mulan would never have lived in the round earthen buildings shown in the movie -- they are tulou, the traditional dwellings of the ethnic Hakka people, the earliest of which were built in the 11th century, 700 years after the Ballad of Mulan was written. Audiences also complained that Mulan is said to have hailed from the north, while tulou are only found in far southern China. But even though Mulan's tulou in the movie was considerably cleaned up, the distinctive structure, with fortified walls designed to fend off invaders and to house up to 800 people, is true to the roughly 3000 real-life tulou still in existence . I photographed them for a @ナショナルジオグラフィック story in 2014. This is how they look in real life. #mulan #mulan2020 #hakka #mulandisney #tulou #worldheritage
