On the path of poets - Matsuo Basho wrote several haiku as he traveled along the Mogami River in the 17th century. The river rises from southern Yamagata Prefecture, flows to the north, turns west and finally flows into the Sea of Japan. With Basho as my guide, I followed it too. Here’s one of his most famous:

Driving the hot sun
into the sea —
Mogami River.
