Early morning light turns turns earthen walls into glowing reflectors: Jiayuguan (Jiayu Pass) marks the western edge of the Ming Dynasty portion of the Great Wall of China. The fortress was built to protect the western frontier of the Chinese empire and played a key role as the entry point to China along the ancient Silk Road. If this looks familiar, it’s because it was also used as a location in Disney’s big-budget live-action remake of Mulan, where the final battle takes place.
