Layered landscapes: Hokkaido, Japan's most northerly island, and one of the snowiest places in the world, is a perfect place to find snowy treescapes. Larch and birch trees are planted to provide wind- and snow-breaks, but like all things Japanese, the practical never supercedes the artistic, as seen in the starkly contrasting patterns formed by the trees.
