From a moment like many, having nothing to do with anything, in everything to do with something… Not that long ago, I was standing by a small table beside a telephone booth along the side of a road. There was a simple stand belonging to a woman who had a broom, two baskets, a half-finished soda bottle repurposed for water. Her roadside display is where she sold homemade food and fruit. She had taken a break to talk with someone at the health clinic behind me. Above her counter, wires dangled. A dog, a moto-taxi, and a lady moved past a long whitewashed wall holding back rising earth of graves in an Iquitos cemetery. While waiting outside of the health center where a friend of mine was being tested for malaria, I became curious about something previously so ubiquitous, checking whether there was a dial tone. Fortunately, Manuel Silva tested negative, and the phone was silent.
