Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz The hills of the Calmont vineyard rise dramatically some 290 meters (950 feet) above the Mosel River, with inclines of up to 65 degrees, making it the steepest vineyard in all of Europe. This wild and mountainous terrain in Bremm, Germany, is ideally suited to viticulture. The inclination of the land angles the plants toward the sun, optimizing the amount of light and warmth that they receive. The slate walls that cross the hill in horizontal steps absorb heat during the day, keeping the grapes warm for much of the night. The harvest is labor-intensive, with workers carefully treading the precipitous slopes to gather the grapes by hand. This particular vineyard within the site is owned by Günter Leitzgen and has been in his family for four generations. Grapevines have been cultivated in these hills continuously since Roman times.
