Photo by Prasenjeet Yadav @prasen.yadav A Khasi man smokes tobacco in his hut while looking at the gloomy weather outside. I spent a lot of time with the Khasi people of India's Meghalaya trying to understand their past by talking to them and reading about their genetic ancestry.
Among approximately 220 tribes of northeast India, only Khasis speak an Austroasiatic language, a family of languages considered to be the oldest identifiable language group of this region that spreads from eastern India to Southeast Asia. Khasi speakers probably went to Southeast Asia via the northeast Indian corridor 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. So the Khasi tribes represent a genetic continuity between the populations of South Asia and Southeast Asia.
