Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz Sunrise illuminates a line of poplar trees that follows a diverted stream down a cliff from the ancient Diskit Monastery. The steep canyon to the right of the monastery leads down from the crests of the Ladakh Range, which has peaks reaching more than 19,000 feet (5,791 meters). The Diskit Monastery was founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, who founded the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is dominated by a 104-foot (32-meter) statue of the Maitreya Buddha, traditionally considered to be the Buddha of the future, who will be born to bring enlightenment to the next age of humankind.
