I’m drawn by the vastness of the landscape, the pristine, untouched wilderness, and the abundance of brown bears. Nearly 20 percent of the world’s population of brown bears can be found in Alaska—some 30,000 bears in all. There’s always a conflicting mix of emotions when thinking about a bear encounter, especially if it’s a big grizzly. The child within us is super-excited to finally meet an actual “teddy bear” from childhood memories, while the adult within us is fearful of meeting the beast from grown-up nightmares.
