Photo by @robert_ormerod The infamous Devil's Island, off the coast of French Guiana, is seen in the last rays of daylight. The island was the site of a French penal colony from 1852 to 1953. The prison was used to exile French political prisoners and gained notoriety after Captain Alfred Dreyfus was held there. It also featured in "Papillon," a semi-autobiographical novel written by Henri Charriere that has been the subject of various films. Today the island is owned by the French space agency CNES due to its proximity to the Kourou Spaceport.
