Photo by @francescolastrucci While traveling on the wild mountain roads of northern Iraq, a few hours' drive north of the Kurdish city of Erbil and close to the town of Rawanduz, I stopped my car to climb and photograph the beautiful, unspoiled mountains surrounding the deep Gali Ali Beg canyon.
The majestic landscape made of rugged mountains and high waterfalls is a great spot for excursions and hikes.
The river snakes its way through the high cliffs of the canyon and along the Hamilton Road, which can be seen in the bottom. Built between 1928 and 1932 by the New Zealand engineer A.M. Hamilton, this spectacular drive that runs between the narrow canyons in the region was made to connect Iraqi Kurdistan with northwest Iran. Besides its strategic purpose, it was made with the hope of uniting the peoples of the neighboring regions.
