Back in the 17th century only Sámi people lived here, until prospectors found silver in the mountains. This resulted in a big expansion, with people moving in from the south of Sweden to capitalize on the minerals. But the silver trade never turned a profit and slowly died down. A quiet time without much investment and expansion followed.⁠ ⁠Today Kvikkjokk is still a hub for the Sámi communities working in the traditional reindeer trade. It has also become a major tourism destination at the end of the road—a place where people jump off a bus or park their car to head into the mountains. ⁠⁠I've been here many times, heading into the Padjelanta or Sarek National Parks, but I have never seen it look as beautiful as it did on this July morning from a helicopter.
