Photo by @daisygilardini A young polar bear cub seeks protection between its mama's legs in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada. Polar bears are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives hunting seals on the frozen Arctic Ocean.
Due to the steady loss of sea ice resulting from climate change, polar bears are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Human-bear encounters are increasing in coastal communities because the bears’ natural habitat is eroding. Bears are seen more often, which creates a hard-to-dispel illusion that bear populations are increasing, when in fact the opposite may be true. The best way to minimize human-wildlife conflict is through information and education. Patrols, watchdogs, flares, and electric fencing are very effective.
