Photo by @daisygilardini A bear in Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park scouts the river estuary, looking for salmon.
It is a brown bear or a grizzly bear? Is there actually a difference? According to the U.S. National Park Service, grizzly and brown bears are the same species (Ursus arctos), but grizzlies are considered a separate subspecies (Ursus arctos horribilis). Generally in North America we refer to coastal bears as brown bears (they have access to marine food such as salmon) and to inland bears as grizzlies. The difference in location and diet translates to a difference in size. Coastal bears are usually much bigger than inland bears.
